Interinstitutional and external cooperation

The Terminology Coordination Unit represents the European Parliament in the two committees managing the interinstitutional tools: IATE and ELISE.

It also participates, together with ITS, to the Language Technology Watch, where it has been entrusted, on an interinstitutional level, with the investigation and testing of  automatic term-extraction tools.

Furthermore, TermCoord organizes regular videoconferences with the Terminology Coordination Services of all the European Institutions, as well as – on request – language-specific interinstitutional videoconferences for terminologists.

We organise presentations of our service for universities and other external bodies, both in Luxembourg and in other locations across Europe, in order to promote the EP terminology approach and to exchange terminology material and know-how.

Cooperation with other services and institutions

TermCoord

  • cooperates with the other horizontal services of our institution, especially Pre-Trad (technical pre-treating of documents) and Liaison Office (ensuring connections to the EP committees);
  • collaborates with DG Personnel for the linguistic aspects of the EP Establishment Plan;
  • cooperates with DGs Presidency, Internal Policies and External Policies for the linguistic aspects of EP databases (Codict, Tosca, Arpège);
  • monitors and coordinates language-specific interinstitutional terminology meetings on a language level;
  • cooperates with the terminology coordination services of the other institutions, especially the Translation Centre.

Seminars and visits to and from universities

In our constant effort to provide quality terminological assistance to the translation services our team tries to be always up to date with the academic and practical trends in terminology. That is why we:

  • organise academic scientific seminars (cycle: “Terminology in the Changing World of Translation”);
  • visit European universities to present the European Parliament terminology service;
  • receive visits from academics and university students to present our service and working methods to them;
  • introduce our visitors to the Commission’s terminology coordination service and to the Translation Centre which organise terminology sessions for them on our demand;
  • participate in international terminology conferences and seminars.
