This annotated bibliography is intended to shed light on the availability and distribution of legal dictionaries that translate the twenty-seven European languages. The representative corpus consists of about 200 printed bilingual legal dictionaries (BLDs) with terms from two or more legal languages used in the European Union. This bibliography aims to illustrate the wide variation in the quality of these BLDs by the usage of three special headings and by referring to relevant professional reviews. In addition, the authors have commented upon noticeable BLDs that deserve serious criticism or special attention. This annotated bibliography updates the previous bibliography (Gerard-René de Groot & Conrad J. P. van Laer. The Quality of Legal Dictionaries: An Assessment [Maastricht Faculty of Law Working Paper No. 2008/6, 2008]) and covers almost all recently published BLDs. However, this bibliography is not exhaustive because of the dispersion of publishing houses: Each publisher issues only two BLDs, on average.

The new Clear Writing campaign was successfully launched in March 2010 and will run for most of the year, culminating in a report with recommendations on sustainable action.
When the idea of a new campaign was mooted, one reason was the recent recruitment of new officials (from the 12 new Member States that joined the EU from 2004 onwards). This major EU enlargement was a fantastic achievement for democracy and for Europe, but it brought two problems for drafting in the Commission: the continued rise of bad English as the Commission’s lingua franca, and the massive influx of new staff who naturally adopted the prevailing in-house style, rather than trying to reform it. So the new campaign would, we realised, have to raise awareness and provide practical ‘quick-fix’ aids to clear writing, offering more access to more kinds of training, and generally promoting the idea that important texts should be revised by a native speaker (preferably a trained editor) before they go public.

Nick Sarantakos is a translator in the Greek Translation Unit of the European Parliament. He has written many books on the subject of Greek language, etymology and lexicography. His new book (only available in Greek) is called “Words Have their Own Story” and contains short stories on 31 words, combined with philosophy on day to day situations.

Il cite une anecdote de 1945 qui attribue à l’un des premiers interprètes de conférences, un nommé Kaminker, une réplique pour le moins culottée à un orateur : – mais, ce n’est pas ce que j’ai dit ! – non, mais c’est ce que vous auriez dû dire ! Au-delà de l’anecdote, et de l’aphorisme italien “Traduttore – traditore” (traducteur, traître), les cas bien réels et certains de traductions douteuses sont nombreux. Premier président du Parlement européen (1952), Paul-Henri Spaak avait déclaré : “Les interprètes nous font dire ce qu’ils veulent”. C’est précisément pour cette raison que l’explorateur norvégien Thor Heyerdhal avait fait cesser la traduction de son ouvrage sur l’expédition du Kon-Tiki en français. La première édition d’un document aussi essentiel que le Traité de Maastricht (253 pages) dut être détruite à cause de la traduction qui laissait à désirer.

Exemplificind cu texte literare, filosofice, dar si cu fragmente din articole si comentarii aparute in presa, volumul trateaza tendintele deformatoare ce insotesc, uneori in mod inerent, actul traducerii (simplificarea, normalizarea, explicitarea etc.) si care indeparteaza nu de putine ori textul destinat culturii-tinta de original. Această carte în mod sigur nu este un manual al traducătorului, nu este un curs universitar, în ciuda faptului că se naşte dintr-un seminar de traduceri. Este o carte care-şi propune să dea primele noţiuni ale disciplinei traductologiei traducătorilor care lucrează cu italiana şi româna, ajutându-i să conştientizeze procesul traducerii. Este pur şi simplu o carte pentru traducatori, un instrument de lucru prealabil; îmi place să consider această lucrare nu ca pe un text complet, ci mai degrabă ca o “propunere de lucru”, deschisă tuturor sugestiilor pe care mi le doresc cat mai multe.

This French thesis was written during March 2010 by Vincent Evers, a student at the University of Utrecht (Faculty of Letters, Department of French Language and Culture) under the direction of Professor Dr. Maarten B. van Buuren. The thesis discusses the history and study of terminology, the “wüsterian” theory and language for specific purposes. There is also an entire chapter dedicated to the use of terminology as a tool for translation.
