IATE Term of the Week – Trawling

This week we have chosen the term “trawling” as the Moroccan government and the EU Commission signed a new 4-year fisheries agreement in Rabat, which will allow 126 European boats to fish, most of them from Spain.

We invite you to suggest the equivalent terms in the missing EU languages, or alternatives to the existing term in your language if you consider the proposed term inaccurate. Provide your answer with a reliable reference and possibly an accurate definition and/or context.

Contribute to IATE!

A terminologist for the respective language will revise your answer and decide whether to validate them. Given the implications of the process, a delay is to be expected.

  1. I did some searches in my ususal resources and in TransSearch (tsrali3.com), the term “trawling” is almost always preceded by the co-occurent term “bottom”. In this case, the French equivalent for “bottom trawling” is “chalutage par le fond”. In WeBiText (webitext.com), I also found “bottom trawling” and “surface trawling”. The French equivalents are respectively “pêche au chalut de fond” and “pêche au chalut de surface”. I hope it helps.
