Drank too much last night? Looking for the ultimate hangover cure? Try a hair of a dog!
The English expression ‘hair of the dog’ is normally used to refer to a small alcoholic drink the day after a long and heavy drinking session that, supposedly, cures a hangover.
In Medieval times, it was thought that if you were bitten by a rabid dog, a hair of that dog (when applied to the wound) would cure any infection. Whilst this belief has long been disregarded as an effective treatment, some believe that there is scientific merit in drinking a small quantity of alcohol to ease the pain of a hangover. The cause of a hangover (in addition to dehydration) is also a partial withdrawal from alcohol, which a small amount of alcohol will alleviate.
